What is African Immortelle Essential Oil?

African immortelle, also known as Helichrysum kraussii, is a native plant of Africa that is distilled into a potent essential oil. When it comes to essential oils from Africa, immortelle oil is one of the most recognizable.

The Historical Significance of African Immortelle Essential Oil

Historically, African immortelle has been used in traditional Angolan medicine for centuries.

Cherished for its rich, earthy aroma and numerous therapeutic and healing properties, African immortelle has been acknowledged by local communities, making it an essential part of their culture and health practices.

Traditional Uses of the African Immortelle Essential Oil

Traditionally, African immortelle has been used for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Throughout the ages, it has been applied topically to heal wounds or soothe skin irritations.

Impepho, Omphepho, or Malufite are a few other names by which the Helichrysum kraussii or African immortelle can also be known and used by local tribes, as an incense to invoke the goodwill of the ancestors, as well as protective or love charms.

Unique Features of the African Immortelle Essential Oil

What sets the African immortelle apart is its unique composition, containing compounds known for their exceptional wellness properties. This makes it a highly sought-after ingredient in the skincare and cosmetic industries.

However, there is more to this very special essential oil. Other Helichrysum kraussii benefits include:

Aroma

African immortelle has a sweet and fruity aroma, known for its slightly floral, herbal, and savory scent with faint chamomile, yarrow, and mint notes. This rich, earthy aroma adds depth and complexity to fragrances, making it one of the best African-sourced oils available today.

Therapeutic Properties

Celebrated for its rejuvenating properties, African immortelle can help with scarring, acne, and stretch marks, or counter the effects of aging, especially when used as an ingredient in cosmetic or skincare products.

Color and Consistency

The oil has a distinct yellow color and is quite mobile, indicating it's a thin oil – at room temperature (20 ºC) its density varies between 0.889 – 0.925.

Commercial Applications

African immortelle has several different possible applications and can be used in skincare, perfumery, and cosmetics for its skin-soothing properties and rich aroma.

These features make African immortelle a valuable addition to any essential oil collection, particularly for companies investing in unique, natural skincare and wellness solutions.

How We Produce African Immortelle Essential Oil

At Scents from Nature, we strive to ensure our production process is green, natural, and carried out in close collaboration with Angolan communities. Our methodology not only contributes to fostering local peoples and promoting sustainability by helping preserve the native plants of Angola but also ensures our essential oils retain their unique properties and aromas.

Naturally, this implies a meticulous procedure. To produce African immortelle essential oil, the process we use is that of steam-distillation.

Here's a step-by-step breakdown of how we transform the African immortelle plant into a unique essential oil:

  • Harvesting
The first step involves the careful harvesting of the African immortelle plant. This is done under the principles of organic culture and through sustainable wild harvesting practices, in close collaboration with the community.

  • Preparation
The harvested plant material – or raw material – is then prepared for distillation. To make sure we distill them fresh, our distilleries are in close proximity to where we harvest these plants.

  • Steam Distillation
With the plant material prepared, we then use state-of-the-art equipment to extract the essential oil as gently as possible. Boiling water releases steam, which passes through the plant material (the entire aerial part) causing the oil glands to rupture and release the essential oil into the steam.

  • Extraction
As the steam is now carrying the essential oil with it, the solution is pushed into a container, which is then cooled – condensing the steam back into water. Since the oil has a lower density than water, the essential oil is left floating on top and is cautiously extracted.

  • Storage
The extracted African immortelle essential oil is carefully poured into a container for storage and prepared for shipping and selling wholesale as one of the best Helichrysum kraussii essential oils available.
