From an East African Compositae, Brachyleana hutchinsii (Brachylaena huillensis), produces a rare oil which is steam distilled from the wood of this tree. The tree is known locally in Kenya and Uganda as Muhugwe tree, and the oil is commercially known as Muhuhu African Sandalwood Organic Essential Oil (Brachylaena huillensis).
The oil has been known for about 30 years outside East Africa. The specific name ―huillensis‖ implying that the type specimen of the species was collected from the Huíla region in Angola in west Africa.
Essential oil isolated from B. huillensis is recommended for soap, perfumery and as a fixative in perfumery.
